In Sicily the magic Christmas feast, founded in 350 AD by the Western Church, is celebrated in all respects. Old and new traditions, religion, folklore and culinary blend together to make one this period of the year.
The table is prepared with typical Sicilian dishes. Like Cuccìa of Saint Lucia, that inaugurate this holiday, dishes prepared just for December 13, day of the patron. The classic and famous Sicilian Cassata, that requires ingredients like sponge cake, ricotta and icing sugar. The Buccellato, nougat like cedar, obtained by cooking chopped cedar and orange peel with honey, cinnamon and vanilla. I Mostaccioli or Mustazzola, and also the cakes with figs, formerly offered at the end of the Christmas novena, the Cassatelle, Pastries stuffed with ricotta, the Sfinci, donuts based on potato starch.
To symbolize the arrival of the holidays there is also the nurture cribs, that are of different shapes, types and materials.
The Pepoli Museum of Trapani holds a rich collection of cribs made in gold, silver and coral, works made by famous sculptors like John Matera. Whole villages become live nativity, where the inhabitants under the sound of bagpipes and songs of the novena, dress in old clothes and staged ancient crafts. The oldest and most beautiful among the living nativities is the Custonaci one, just 15 minutes from Trapani, in the cave of prehistoric Mangiapane Scurati (from 25 December to 6 January 2010).

The FIFA World Cup won almost 4 years ago in Germany by the Italian national team will be display in Trapani from 14th to 17th January 2010. Another opportunity to visit Western Sicily
The prestigious FIFA World Cup, won by the Italian team in Germany in 2006, will be exhibited from 14th to 17th January 2010 in the regional headquarters of the Province of Trapani probably in Palazzo Riccio Moran or in Government House (in the historical center). During the same period the fifth edition of the Trophy "Sicily Cup - Peter Paul Brucato will take place, it will be reserved for the youth representative of the region.
